Open USD Stablecoin Launches With Major Payment Network Backing
The stablecoin's debut marks a direct challenge to the incumbent market dominance of Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC, which collectively command nearly 90% of the stablecoin supply. Open Standard's economic model offers a compelling incentive: 1:1 minting and redemption at no cost, with all earnings from the token's reserves, minus a small management fee, distributed back to its extensive network of partners.
OUSD is natively supported across several prominent blockchain networks, including Base, Ethereum, Solana, and Tempo, ensuring broad interoperability from day one. At launch, the stablecoin is available for trading on major cryptocurrency exchanges such as Coinbase and Kraken, alongside the decentralized exchange Uniswap, with plans for further expansion to additional venues in the near future.
The issuer of OUSD is Bridge, the stablecoin infrastructure firm acquired by Stripe in 2024. This strategic integration leverages Stripe's established payment rails, providing a robust foundation for OUSD's functionality. The stablecoin's reserves are held by institutional-grade custodians, specifically BlackRock, Lead Bank, and BNY Mellon, with monthly attestations published on Bridge's dedicated reserves page to ensure transparency and trust.
The consortium's initial pitch in June introduced OUSD with over 140 participating entities. That number has since swelled to more than 200 financial institutions, fintech companies, traditional banks, and global businesses. These partners are positioned to earn rewards proportionate to the supply and activity they generate within the OUSD ecosystem, along with the potential to accrue equity in Open Standard.
The five founding partners—Coinbase, Mastercard, Shopify, Stripe, and Visa—have collectively committed over $1 billion in near-term launch liquidity, underscoring the significant institutional confidence behind the project. This substantial capital infusion aims to provide deep market stability and ample capacity for large-scale enterprise adoption from the outset.
In a notable ecosystem development concurrent with the launch, Pi Network announced a partnership with Open Standard. This collaboration could eventually integrate OUSD-based rewards and introduce additional utility within the broader Pi ecosystem, potentially bringing the new stablecoin to Pi Network's expansive user base.
Open Standard is strategically targeting key sectors of the global financial system, including traditional banking, cross-border payments, inter-company settlement, and institutional trading. By streamlining these processes with a low-cost, high-efficiency stablecoin, the project aims to capture a significant share of the multi-trillion-dollar global payments market currently reliant on less efficient traditional rails or fragmented crypto solutions.
This concerted effort by a powerful alliance of crypto-native and traditional finance entities to introduce a competitive stablecoin suggests a maturing digital asset landscape, where interoperability and institutional readiness are paramount. The focus on passing reserve income to partners and offering a 1:1 minting model differentiates OUSD from several existing stablecoin structures that rely on varied fee schedules or do not directly share reserve yields.
While the immediate liquidity and strong backing provide a formidable entry, the long-term success of OUSD will hinge on its ability to demonstrate sustained utility, maintain its peg amidst market fluctuations, and effectively onboard a diverse array of businesses beyond its initial partner network. The coming months will reveal whether this new entrant can truly disrupt the established stablecoin order and reshape the future of digital payments for global enterprises. How quickly will OUSD erode the market share of its predecessors, and will its unique economic incentives prove sufficient to catalyze widespread adoption across both Web2 and Web3 financial infrastructures?
