Mistral Unveils 1 Trillion-Parameter ML4, Challenges Closed AI Dominance

A new 1 trillion-parameter artificial intelligence model, Mistral Large 4 (ML4), has been launched by French startup Mistral, marking a significant escalation in the competition for open-weight AI solutions. Dubbed "Chonk" by some, the natively multimodal model features 49 billion active parameters, emphasizing enhanced performance and security for enterprises prioritizing data privacy. It allows clients to download and customize the model's parameters, or weights, directly onto their own servers, a direct counterpoint to the proprietary, closed models offered by companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.

ML4 was trained from scratch over two months on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs within Mistral's European data centers, a substantial investment in sovereign AI infrastructure. This launch follows Mistral's record-breaking three billion euro ($3.4 billion) funding round last month, Europe's largest technology fundraising to date.

The model demonstrates compelling performance across critical enterprise applications. On legal and financial benchmarks, third-party evaluators (vals.ai) found ML4 to exceed the capabilities of OpenAI’s GPT-6-Astra. It also surpassed all other open-source models on HarveyAI's Legal Agent benchmark, underscoring its utility for specialized knowledge work.

In agentic workflows, ML4 achieved a 59.9% score on AutomationBench, a suite evaluating 657 business workflows across diverse applications. This places it ahead of competitors such as Kimi K3 and MiMo-V2.6-Pro. For long-horizon knowledge tasks, ML4 scored 1,393 Elo on AA-Briefcase, outperforming DeepSeek V4 Pro.

The model’s prowess extends to coding and software engineering. Mistral Large 4 posted a combined Coding Agent Index score of 49.8%, positioning it ahead of DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813 and Qwen3.8 Max. In a blind human evaluation conducted by Surge AI, where professional annotators rated coding quality on a 1-5 scale, ML4 ranked second with a score of 3.74, behind only Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5 (4.22) but ahead of Kimi K3, GLM-5.3, and GLM-5.2.

Mistral's strategic focus on open-weight models is a direct challenge to the market dominance of closed systems, particularly as companies and governments increasingly seek total control over their AI deployments to avoid exposing sensitive data to third parties. This allows for greater customization and potentially lower operational costs, according to the company.

The release intensifies competition within the rapidly evolving open-weight AI landscape. Just yesterday, Reflection AI, a US-based rival, announced its own widely anticipated Beam model, an open-weight offering with 501 billion total parameters, 23 billion active, also promising cheaper operating costs and enhanced reasoning capabilities. Mistral claims ML4 stands as "by far the best in Europe and the US" among open-weight models.

Mistral’s Chief Executive Arthur Mensch noted that the model, still undergoing refinement, was trained and served on their own compute, with reinforcement learning showing "no sign of saturation." This suggests substantial headroom for future improvements. The company's significant capital injection is actively being deployed to scale up compute capacity in its European data centers, anticipating further advancements.

The push for sovereign AI, where entities retain full control over their data and models, appears to be gaining momentum. How quickly large enterprises and public sector organizations migrate to such architectures, balancing perceived benefits of control against the established ecosystems of larger, closed-model providers, remains a central question for the industry’s trajectory.
